Project MKUltra
🏛️ Official record
CIA (exposed at 1977 Senate hearings) · USA · Canada · 1953–1973
149 subprojects used LSD, hypnosis, sensory deprivation and shock to study behaviour control, mostly on unwitting subjects; biochemist Frank Olson fell to his death after being dosed in 1953; Director Helms ordered files destroyed in 1973, but a misfiled batch surfaced in 1977.
VerdictOfficially confirmed to have existed; never shown to have produced any ‘controllable’ person.

Optogenetics & ‘implanting false memories’
🔬 Achieved by science
Stanford/MIT · Boyden et al. (2005) · Ramirez & Tonegawa (Science 2013) · USA · 2005–2013
Light controls neurons expressing opsins; in 2013 MIT ‘wrote’ a never-experienced fear memory into a mouse’s hippocampus.
VerdictPrecise control of animal behaviour and memory is now a routine research tool.

‘Voodoo death’ research
🎓 Academic research
Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon (American Anthropologist 1942) · USA (cases from Australia, Africa, S. America) · 1942
Collected records of people ‘cursed’ and dying within days, proposing extreme fear driving sympathetic overactivation — today’s nocebo / psychogenic death.
VerdictAccepts the phenomenon is real; the mechanism is psycho-physiological, not magic.
