Soul leaving the body; a free-floating consciousness

Reality checkOut-of-body experiences (OBEs) are a real subjective phenomenon that can be induced by brain stimulation or VR; controlled evidence that the ‘soul truly leaves and gathers information’ is very weak (Tart’s single case, AWARE’s zero). The US Army Intelligence Command formally evaluated the Monroe Institute’s ‘Gateway’ OBE training.

Army ‘Analysis and Assessment of the Gateway Process’

🏛️ Official record
US Army Intelligence & Security Command INSCOM · Lt-Col Wayne McDonnell (declassified by CIA 2003) · USA, Fort Meade · 1983-06-09

An official memo evaluating the Monroe Institute’s ‘Hemi-Sync’ binaural-beat consciousness-expansion / OBE training, explained via holographic-universe, quantum theory and Eastern meditation; the fabled ‘missing page 25’ was restored in 2021.

VerdictJust an internal evaluation; not a confirmation of OBEs.

Tart’s ‘Miss Z’ sleep-lab OBE experiment

🎓 Academic research
UC Davis, Charles Tart (J. ASPR 1968) · USA · 1968

A young woman who reported OBEs slept 4 nights in the lab; on the 4th she read out a 5-digit random number (25132) placed on a high shelf out of her sight.

VerdictA single case, never replicated; Tart admitted cheating couldn’t be fully ruled out.

Electrical stimulation induces OBE

🎓 Academic research
Geneva Univ Hospital / EPFL Blanke (Nature 2002) · Switzerland · 2002

Stimulating an epileptic patient’s right angular gyrus repeatedly induced the experience of ‘floating above and looking down at oneself’.

VerdictOBEs arise from multisensory-integration disturbance at the temporoparietal junction — inducible at will.

VR-induced OBE

🎓 Academic research
Karolinska / UCL Ehrsson (Science 2007) · Sweden · UK · 2007

Head-mounted displays plus synchronised touch made healthy people ‘see themselves from behind’ and even react physiologically to threats to the ‘virtual body’.

VerdictBodily self-location can be fooled.

AWARE cardiac-arrest awareness study

🎓 Academic research
Southampton → NYU, Sam Parnia (Resuscitation 2014; AWARE-II 2023) · 15 hospitals, UK/US · 2008–2023

Of 2,060 cardiac arrests ~2% reported awareness; pictures visible only from above were placed on high shelves — nobody reported seeing them.

VerdictOBE reports are real; ‘gathering information from above’ has zero verification.
